Alice reflects on her lab coat:

“When Yuanjia presented me with my CLOAK, it was a very special moment. I don’t wear a lab coat very often anymore, apart from when I’m teaching. In the first workshop, we talked about how I try to balance my time between research, teaching and science communication. I think that’s why she chose to create an extra pair of arms for me; another pair of imaginary hands sitting in the sleeves as my own slipped through the slits in the side of the coat. We also chatted about one of my science heroes, Nobel prize winner Prof Tu YouYou; I made a very rough sketch of her while we were talking and it made it into the fabric of the cloak. I love the punk feel of the garment. It resonates with my desire to rethink the way that we do, teach and share science and who has ‘permission’ to take part. A do-it-yourself science, as it were, one that empowers people who haven’t always felt included to take part.”
